2021's Most Anticipated Smartphones

UPDATED: The iPhone 13 will be released .

The epidemic may have delayed and stopped many things in 2020, but it didn't stop the tech industry from producing several of the incredible cellphones.

With the Samsung Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 9 already being old news, as well as leaks and rumors' pointing to large new phones from all of the other major manufacturers, that trend appears to be set to continue unabated into 2021. We'll almost certainly see 5G support in nearly every notable release, including a growing number of phones at lower price points. We're hoping to see some very unique designs included in the mix as well.

If you're thinking about upgrading this year, here's a list of all the significant phones that have been rumored or leaked so far. And stay tuned, since we'll be updating this list throughout the year with fresh entries and information, as well as links to our evaluations of recently released phones

APPLE IPHONE 13

According to multiple leaks from the supply chain, the iPhone 13 will have a narrower notch — something that has been rumored since the launching of the iPhone X, but to no effect — but would otherwise look similar to the iPhone 12. A more greppable matte backing is also rumored, but it's unclear whether this would be limited to the Pro models.

Along with a better ultra-wide camera and enhanced astrophotography smarts, we could see the sensor-shift optical image stabilization from the iPhone 12 Pro Max extend to the entire iPhone 13 series. There's also speculation of a 1TB storage option, which would quadruple the current maximum available on the iPhone 12 Pro, though reports on that have been conflicting.

Let's hope the rumored 120Hz screen refresh rate, which didn't make the cut on the iPhone 12 (pictured), makes an appearance on the iPhone 13; rumors' claim it will, coupled with an always-on display comparable to the Apple Watch Series 5 and 6.

Apple's normal release window is September, however due to the pandemic, the latest one was postponed to October. The iPhone 13 is expected to be unveiled in the same kind of autumn window this year, with some sources speculating that the launch will follow the all-virtual event in 2021.

GOOGLE PIXEL 6 + 6 PRO

If the Pixel 5's drab appearance drove you away from Google's phones last year, the Pixel 6 might entice you back. These concept images, based on leaked specs, reveal a much more unique look with a red top panel above the horizontal edge-to-edge camera module, thanks to noted leaker Jon Prosser. It's one-of-a-kind.

As Google moves away from last year's mid-range Pixel 5 approach, Prosser suggests both Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro versions are in the works. Both phones are likely to employ entirely new Google-made processors rather than Qualcomm's standard Snapdragon chips, so we'll have to wait and see how they compare.

The Pixel 6 may draw you back to Google's phones if the Pixel 5's dreary look pushed you away last year. Thanks to prominent leaker Jon Prosser, these concept photos based on leaked specs indicate a much more unusual style with a red top panel above the horizontal edge-to-edge camera module. It's a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Prosser claims that both a Pixel 6 and a Pixel 6 Pro are in the works, as Google pushes away from last year's mid-range Pixel 5. We'll have to wait and see how they compare because both phones are likely to have wholly new Google-made processors rather than Qualcomm's conventional Snapdragon chips.

SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FOLD 3

Following months of rumours and concept renders, prominent leaker Evan Blass has provided leaked renders and a series of animated GIFs of the rumoured Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is slated to debut with other new devices on August 11 at a Galaxy Unpacked event.

Although it lacks the rumoured S Pen stylus slot, it appears to be a slimmer phone than the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It will apparently be compatible with the S Pen, similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but without a slot for the pen to be inserted into. Indeed, the S Pen in this leaked render is labelled "Fold Edition," implying that it will function differently than the usual S Pen due to the foldable screen technology. In terms of specifications, we could see 120Hz.

Evan Blass, the aforementioned source, also revealed a list of specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. If the reported features are to be believed – and his track record of reliable information suggests they are – the folding flagship will have screens that are similar in size to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. (a 7.6in inner display, with a 6.2in secondary screen on the exterior).

The most significant difference could be in price: we've heard that the Z Fold 3 will cost $1,599 in the United States, which is $400 less than the Z Fold 2. If the UK version receives a comparable price reduction, it might be priced between £1,400 and £1,500. On that front, we'll keep our fingers crossed.

SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FLIP 3

Isn't this supposed to be the Z Flip 2? According to rumours, Samsung has concluded that last year's 5G revision of the original phone is a proper sequel, implying that the next phone would be called the Galaxy Z Flip 3. At the very least, it unifies the names of Samsung's current foldables.

Evan Blass has published leaked video renders of the phone, similar to the Z Fold 3, which reveal a smartphone that isn't drastically different in approach. However, there appear to be more colour options, and the larger external screen is located on the black accent on the outside, which might be useful.

Blass also confirmed a couple of the Flip 3's projected specifications. These indicate that the Z Flip 3 will have the same 6.7-inch foldable display as the original Z Flip, as well as a 1.9-inch secondary screen on the outside, up from 1.1-inch on the first Z Flip.

As foldable prices begin to reduce over time, we could see a lower pricing than its predecessor. We're also anticipating this one on August 11th.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S21 FE

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, the follow-up to last year's excellent budget flagship, has been leaked by both Blass and China's TENAA agency, giving us a very good sense of what to anticipate. This one takes design cues from the S21, but the jewel-like camera module on the economy variant is considerably less defined: it just seems like a piece of the plastic backing panel.

Otherwise, it should be very close to the normal S21 in terms of specs, including a 120Hz 1080p screen, an Exynos 2100 or Snapdragon 888 engine, and excellent cameras, depending on area. Expect it to cost slightly less than the Galaxy S21 and to go on sale on August 11th, among the other Galaxy models listed above, in a variety of colours.

HUAWEI P50 AND P50 PRO

On July 29, Huawei's latest powerful smartphones were unveiled, confirming the majority of the rumours. The P50 Pro, which will be released alongside the P50, will include an eye-catching camera module with two extra-large circles – a ‘dual-matrix' – containing a quartet of lenses, as seen in leaked renders.

The P50 Pro is a party for smartphone photographers, with 50MP colour, 40MP monochrome, 13MP ultra-wide angle, and 64MP telephoto lenses, as well as a 13MP wide-angle selfie camera.

With a 50MP color lens, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens, the basic P50 is a tad less powerful camera-wise.

We won't know how both flagships perform in action until we have a chance to review them. We won't know how effectively Harmony OS — the company's new in-house software – works until we have some hands-on time. What is obvious is that the P50 will not include Google's apps and services, nor will it support 5G due to US hardware constraints. In fact, it's unclear when or if the P50 Pro will be released outside of China...

GOOGLE PIXEL 5A

Between the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5, all of which launched in the latter months of last year, things got a little complicated, especially since the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 have a lot of similarities. With the rumored debut of the Pixel 5a, things may become even more puzzling.

That's a concept render from On Leaks up there, and if you think it's just the Pixel 4a 5G, we understand. There aren't any clear distinctions that we can identify, so either Google has a favourite design or the leaks haven't revealed enough information yet.

Recent rumors' stated that Google had scrapped plans for the Pixel 5a owing to the current chip scarcity, but Google surprised everyone by confirming that the Pixel 5a will be released this year around the same time as the Pixel 4a (August), but only in the US and Japan. Bloomberg predicts that it will arrive in August.
